Armidale Regional Council – Armidale, NSW – (Barrel vault sound shelter)
I am totally over the moon about the result. It is even better in the flesh than the original concept. I know it was a challenging project for many reasons but the results make it all worthwhile.
Thank you Craig for your willingness to accommodate custom ideas and work with me on the project right from the start. That’s a rare quality these days and I would highly recommend your business to anyone. Your staff did a great job on site.
The vision has become a reality and we are receiving great feedback from the community.
Thanks again for all your great work. Richard Morsley, Armidale Regional Council.
Bob & Shaun Redman – Floraville, NSW – (Barrel vault awnings)
Barrel Vault Shade Structures – competent, friendly team: good communications; clear options and recommendations; timely delivery; quality structures. We are delighted.
Thank you Shade To Order. Bob and Shaun Redman
Dave & Angela Brown – Whitebridge, NSW – (Barrel vault outdoor shade sail)
WOW! and WOW! – Words can’t express how happy both Dave and myself are with our outstanding new back area. You have transformed it into another ‘room’. We have had so many comments and people stopping me and asking who did it…. one of our friends is actually going to call you for a quote / design…
From the moment we contacted you, your attention to detail and customer service has been outstanding, friendly, professional and so helpful. We were able to go and take a look at a few other ‘happy customers’ finished projects prior to ours starting, who again, spoke so highly of your services.
Happy from the beginning ‘ideas’ concept drawings you gave us – to the communication and measuring and starting the job. Quality and knowledge, together with an exceptional eye for detail and happy, smiling faces – from all your staff. So much work had to go into it. Such an amazing solid architectural structure!
We would be more than happy to ‘show’ off our roof to other potential customers and I’m sure they will be as happy as we are.
Thank you very much to each and everyone of you.
Joe & Elsa Best – Eleebana, NSW – (Barrel vault awning & hypar pool sail)
All we can say is Craig and his team exceeded our expectations and delivered an absolutely brilliant product on budget (actually slightly below) and on time.
We are thrilled with the quality and finish and the whole experience.
These guys rock! Regards Elza and Joe Best
John & Helen Murray – Morisset Park, NSW – (Polyedge shade sail over deck)
Our waterfront home on Lake Macquarie faces due East exposing us to the North Easterly winds which can be severe on occasions. We also wanted to maximise our view across the lake. The only way we could achieve this was to build a large deck on the lakeside of our home. The challenge then was to find a suitable cover for the deck that was practicle and still complimented our home. We made a number of inquiries and were directed to Shade To Order for a possible solution. From our first contact with the team at Shade to Order we knew we had the right people. They presented us with a number options and worked with us to provide a concept that capitalised on the view, provided excellent cover and strong enough to withstand the strongest winds.
Construction was quick, efficient and very professional. We were kept informed on every aspect and at the end we had the most amazing deck and shade.
We have had lots of positive comments from friends, neighbours and particularly those that see it from the water. But most of all we love it, thank you Shade to Order.
Gorokan Preschool, Gorokan, NSW – (Barrel vault shade sail over play equipment)
Thanks so much for installing our shade above our nest swing. You have done an amazing job, lots of wonderful feedback.
My biggest concern regarding a shade was not to have any more poles installed into the playground softfall. This design is amazing.
Thanks again for a great job and thanks to Brock and Kyle for doing a fantastic job installing the shade.
Thanks from the Gorokan Preschool Team.

Perry Hughes – Riverview, NSW – (Polyedge carport shade sail)
Very happy with the Shade to Order team, they did a great job and carried out some additional items without any extra costs, very easy to deal with and most accommodating with install dates.
Highly recommended if you have any sail shade requirements.
King Tide Cafe, John Griffiths – Brooklyn, NSW – (Barrel vault shade structure over alfresco cafe deck)
You can be lucky as I was to have Shade To Order work with us. Our Cafe is on a boardwalk over the water, so we had a few issues with the build which was not an issue for Craig and his Team.
They are skilled, competent and professional with a can-do attitude. The build itself was quality and solid, it looks fantastic.
It is enjoyable to come across people that are not only confident but capable…..well done.
Nova for Women and Children, Cooks Hill, NSW – (Polyedge playground shade sail)
Could not recommend Shade to Order highly enough. We are over the moon with the quality and finish, but also how much the shade sail has improved our children’s play area. From the initial consultation, to the final installation, the Management and Crew were super friendly, great to work with while being extremely professional.
The guidance and assistance we were given throughout this whole process has been nothing less than amazing and we are extremely grateful for all their support.
Steve & Margaret Pratt – Maryland, NSW – (Barrel vault pool shade shelter)
We love the new shelter! It has been admired by many over the weekend.
A huge thank you to all the team at Shade To Order, very professional, we were always kept in the loop and we have a fantastic end result.
Rob Nichols – Coal Point, NSW – (Barrel vault shade structure canopy over outdoor deck)
Our lake front home presented some difficulties for the design and construction of a shade structure. Firstly we face due west and this meant a low fronted structure was required to reduce the heat and glare from the afternoon summertime sun. The second problem was a split gable curved roof-line that made it difficult to prevent rain ingress between the shade structure and the front of our home. Naturally this was important as we wanted to use our deck even if there was some rain.
In our initial discussions with Shade to Order, Craig Flanagan the CEO, was not sure our design criteria could be met but we went to his ‘drawing board’ to see if a solution could be arrived at. Over a period of a time, Craig was willing to sit with us at his design computer to arrive at a solution.
The shade structure has greatly improved the aesthetic appeal of our home and given us an area that we can enjoy year round. We are absolutely delighted with the end result and are really enjoying our deck, so well done Craig and the Shade to Order team.
Andrew & Camille Hickey – Merewether, NSW – (Polyedge shade sail over courtyard area)
In 1998, Craig Flanagan and his company, Shade to Order, installed a shade over our courtyard. We live in a first line salt area and often experience strong southerly and westerly winds. The anchoring of the sail has been so secure that we have never had a moment’s concern.
We have regular servicing of the fabric and this keeps the sail looking as new. We have only needed one replacement sail following damage to the under-surface when a severe and unprecedented storm with driving horizontal rain hit the Hunter Area.
From the original installation and with all the follow up servicing, Craig and his team have been reliable, efficient, careful and always thorough in the clean up afterwards.
We would highly recommend Shade to Order as an excellent and highly skilled company to deal with.
Edgeworth Community Preschool – Edgeworth, NSW – (Barrel vault shade cover)
I cannot speak highly enough of our experience with “Shade To Order”. From the initial consultation, right through to the completion of the job, everyone we dealt with was professional and friendly. The boys came out to double check measurements and to ensure we were happy with the quote.
The sail itself has changed our preschool for the better with the children now being able to play outside and stay dry even in heavy rain. The white colour of the shade has allowed lots more natural light to flood the preschool, while still protecting the children from the sun.
Thanks so much!
Specialised Textiles Association – (Australia’s Fabric Structure Association)
Shade sails have come a long way over the past couple of decades, thanks to the imagination and forward thinking of industry leaders.
If you have visited the Newcastle Airport recently, you would have noticed the fine work of Specialised Textiles Association member Shade to Order from Gateshead NSW.
Shade to Order strive to design shade sails that complement their surroundings, and in this case, provide those who arrive in Newcastle with a positive first impression.
Oakleigh Recreation Centre – Jonathan Mackay, Project Architect
(Series of Hypar shade sails in recreation pool area)
To the team at Shade to Order, I would like to congratulate you on the job you have done at our new outdoor aquatic facilities. I am extremely impressed with the service you and your company have given us from inception to completion, and it has been a great pleasure dealing with you all.
I look forward to the possibility of working with you on future projects, and will be sure to recommend your company to others. We have had many comments on the structures (all positive) and I believe that they have contributed in a big way to the entire project both aesthetically and functionally.
The quality of the end result speaks for itself. It also demonstrates the craftsmanship and pride that Shade to Order employees must take in their work.
Australian Institute of Sport – Penleigh Boyd, Penleigh Boyd Architecture & Design
(Barrel vault shade structure, design bio-mechanical doors)
We thank you and your company for the professional service provided to my firm during the design stage and to the AIS during the construction phase of the Biomechanics Doors Refurbishment.
My firm was engaged by the AIS to design the refurbishment of their iconic Sports Science Sports Medicine Biomechanics Doors. Our proposal was to sheath the door modules with a “raincoat” and knew of Teflon Coated Fibreglass membrane, by reputation, as the best product for the job. However we were having trouble getting practical industry assistance until we found your company. Your helpful advice regarding appropriate product, techniques, detailing and supply issues has been invaluable. We also appreciate your inventiveness in developing the two skin solution when the Client requested “blackout” facility for the doors.
The finished product looks excellent and is a credit to your firm and the personnel who worked on it. I am impressed by your “hands on” approach to the work, your attention to detail and the level of equipment and resources available to your company.
The Scots College – Grahame Allen, Director – (Conical shade sail covering assembly area)
I wish to express to you and your team at Shade to Order how delighted I am with the shaded structure that your company installed at The Scots College – Glengarry Campus in March this year. At every point from start to finish, your company’s handling of the process of getting this structure in place was highly professional.
Your consultation with us was prompt and efficient. Liasing with out local council and various authorities was superbly handled and we ended up with a structure that has added an immense benefit to the operation of our program for the boys.
Peninsula Waters (Soldiers Point) – David Harrison – (Barrel vault awning covering walkway)
It has been a pleasure working with such a well co-ordinated organisation right from our initial contact with Shade to Order, through many discussions during the installation process and the completed job which is very much to our satisfaction.
Craig Flanagan, the owner of Shade to Order has personally taken interest in our project and been very approachable and contactable at all times. Shade to Order crew are professional and work in a tidy manner. I am happy to recommend and endorse this company as specialists in their work.
Brigidine College – Clive Chandler, Director – (Inverted conical shade structures covering quadrangle)
Shade to Order was the successful ”design and construct” contractor selected to provide our College with a modern and effective shade structure known as an “Inverted Conical Canopy”.
Our initial criterion was to provide a waterproof and unobtrusive cover for our Quadrangle. The cover measured 28m long x 24m wide. Part of the Quadrangle was to remain uncovered to allow light and sun penetration at one end. A high and open area with good air flow was important.
Shade to Order provided a physical scale model, computerised virtual tour and photographic images of previous installations to allow our Board members to visualise and sanction the concept. A competitive quotation followed which was bench marked against the market.
Communication during the design phase was good, and manufacture, installation and commissioning of the structure were efficiently managed. We have experienced a professional service from Shade to Order in all aspects of the project.
We are proud of our tensioned membrane structure in the Quadrangle which has been a very cost effective solution for us. Shade to Order has warranted the materials for 12 years. Our College would be happy to endorse their work based on our experience on this project.
Belmont Public School – Kathryn Kitcher, Treasurer – (Polyedge shade sail over playground area)
Belmont Public School has an awesome Shade structure over the Infant’s Play Area covering approximately 191 sq metres. The project was undertaken by Shade To Order of Gateshead NSW. The whole company has been a pleasure to do business with, and in every facet of the project, we can highly recommend the quality of their craftsmanship to any prospective customers.
From the initial contact with the company, when we requested a quote to apply for a Federal Government Grant, to the finished product, we have noted their professionalism and helpfulness, their patience and understanding in our dealings with a number of statutory bodies necessary to see our project come to fruition. The best advertisement for this product, of which there is no equal, is to see our children playing happily each day under the expanse of shade created by this beautiful, well built structure. Our School community salutes you!
National Museum of Australia – Philip Nizette – (Series of Hypar shade structures)
I am writing to express our thanks and appreciation for the excellent work you and your staff did for the National Museum Shade Structures project. We were extremely pleased with the collaborative process from the initial development of concepts through to the final agreed designs. The rendered images and supporting information you provided greatly assisted the Client and The National Capital Authority in visualising and approving the shade structures.
The fabrication and installation stages of the project also flowed smoothly thanks to your professional approach. Quality workmanship and responsive additions such as the customised tensioning system contribute to the success of the structures.
The six shade structures work well in the space and are in harmony with the strong architecture of the Museum. I believe the scale, colours and sculptural ‘hypar’ shapes all contribute to the success of the structures in the space.
The Client is very pleased with the final result and as you are aware may require an additional structure, following an analysis of use, over the coming months. We look forward to working with you on future projects and would be happy to recommend your company to prospective clients.
